Nyack Athletics involved in Missions Outreach
Warriors News
12/16/08- The athletic department at Nyack College recently completed, with the assistance of the Nyack Colllege Honors Program, a labor of love, collecting, catalouging and sending a library of approxamately 1,250 books to the Angware Secondary School in Nigeria. Angware was a school with no library, until Warrior Athletic Director and Head Men's Soccer Coach, Keith Davie discovered there was a way to help them with this vital need. Davie had participated in a sports-related missions trip to Nigeria last fall, supported by Sports Friends Nigeria, the athletic arm of Sudan Interior Mission (SIM). During the trip, which involved using soccer to help bring the gospel message to the people of Nigeria, Davie heard of the need for a library at the Angware Secondary School.
Upon his return Davie was able to recruit the Warrior athletic department in his desire to see a library for the students at Angware. During the spring a massive book drive was held and with the assistance of Mandy Aikens, athletic department Compliance Director, Penny Foland, Head Athletic Trainer, Josh Thompson, Head Women's Basketball Coach and Warrior athletes the library was collected and organized. Students from the Nyack College Honors Program, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Gates, helped to catalouge the library.
This fall the library was ready to send on the long trip to Nigeria. The books made their way to a shipping company in Georgia where they were then packed for their special journey to Nigeria and the Angware Secondary School. Now students, who previously had no access to a library and the wealth of knowledge that a library brings, are able to enjoy the 1,250-book collection; and the students and staff of the Nyack College athletic department are able to enjoy the satisfaction that helping others in need brings.
